Terms of Use
This English translation is provided for convenience only. The German version is the legally binding one: Nutzungsbedingungen.
Last updated: 1 October 2026
These terms of use govern the use of the CacheHunter app. Please read them carefully.
1. Provider and subject matter
The provider is Jörg Schambeck, Gailenreuther Str. 3d, 81243 Munich, Germany, email: info@cachehunter.eu.
CacheHunter is an app for searching for geocaches, managing your own finds and GPX data, recording routes, and creating, sharing and playing private treasure hunts. Cache data is obtained from Opencaching.de or imported by the user from a GPX file. The app can be used without a user account. Information on data processing can be found in the privacy policy.
2. Independence from third parties
CacheHunter is an independent service. The app is not affiliated with Groundspeak Inc. (Geocaching HQ) and is neither endorsed nor reviewed by it. “Geocaching” is a registered trademark of Groundspeak Inc.
CacheHunter uses the public interface of Opencaching.de but is not a service of Opencaching Deutschland e.V.
3. Right of use
The user receives a simple, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the app on their own devices for private purposes. This right exists for as long as the provider offers and technically supports the app.
Decompiling, reverse engineering or otherwise modifying the app is not permitted unless mandatory law allows it.
4. Safety outdoors
Geocaching and treasure hunts take place outdoors. Taking part is at your own risk. In particular:
- Do not use the app while in traffic, and pay attention to your surroundings while walking.
- A time limit, par time or points score in a treasure hunt is no reason to hurry outdoors or in traffic.
- Respect property rights, no-entry signs, nature reserves, breeding and closed seasons, and local rules. A cache or stage shown in the app does not mean that you may enter the place.
- Judge the terrain, the weather and your own abilities yourself.
- Where children take part, supervision is the responsibility of their parents or the organisers.
5. Accuracy of data and functions
GPS position, compass, distance and elevation data depend on the device, its sensors and reception conditions and may be inaccurate. This also applies to unlocking treasure-hunt stages by GPS radius. Calculated routes are non-binding suggestions; they take account of neither road safety nor current path closures or access restrictions.
Cache data, map data and descriptions come from third parties. The provider gives no guarantee that they are correct, complete or up to date, in particular not that a cache exists, is accessible or that the coordinates given are correct.
6. Opencaching account
Signing in with an Opencaching.de account is optional. The account and all content published there are governed exclusively by the terms of use of Opencaching.de. Logs and photos you publish through the app are publicly visible on Opencaching.de and are licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 3.0.
7. User content
The user alone is responsible for logs, comments, photos, voice recordings, caches they have hidden and treasure hunts. This also applies to treasure hunts created from one of the app’s templates: templates are suggestions that the user adapts to the place and the players. The user warrants that
- they hold the necessary rights to photos and recordings,
- people shown or recorded agree to publication or sharing,
- the content does not infringe applicable law or the rights of third parties,
- hiding places, treasure-hunt stages and QR codes put up do not endanger anyone and do not infringe the rights of third parties; the user only puts up printed QR codes with permission and removes them again after the game.
Where treasure hunts are passed on by QR code or file, this happens directly between users. The provider has no influence on this content and does not adopt it as its own.
8. Third-party services
The map display, cache data, place search and routing rely on third-party services (including OpenFreeMap, Mapterhorn, Opencaching.de, OSRM (FOSSGIS e.V.) and Nominatim), and QR code scanning relies on Google ML Kit. The provider has no influence on their availability and features. If a third party changes or ends its service, individual functions of the app may be restricted temporarily or permanently. The provider will try to find an alternative in that case but is not obliged to provide one.
9. Costs
The app can currently be used entirely free of charge and contains no purchases.
10. Liability
The provider is liable without limitation for intent and gross negligence, for injury to life, body or health, and under the German Product Liability Act.
In the case of simple negligence, the provider is only liable for breach of essential contractual obligations (cardinal obligations) and limited to the foreseeable damage typical for the contract.
In the event of data loss, the provider is only liable for the effort that would have been required for recovery had the user backed up their data regularly (for example using the app’s backup function).
No guarantee is given that the app will be available at all times or free of errors.
11. Sources and licences
- Map data: © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License (ODbL)
- Map tiles: OpenFreeMap
- Terrain shading: © Mapterhorn, created from numerous open elevation datasets of national and regional survey agencies; full list of sources at https://mapterhorn.com/attribution
- Cache data: © the respective author, Opencaching.de, licence CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 DE
- Routing: OSRM, server of FOSSGIS e.V.
- Place search: Nominatim, © OpenStreetMap contributors
- Fonts: Caprasimo and Figtree, SIL Open Font License
- Icons: Lucide, ISC licence
The full licence notices are also available in the app under Me > Settings > Licences & data sources.
12. Changes to these terms
The provider may change these terms of use with effect for the future where this is necessary because of changes in the law, case law, requirements of the authorities, changed terms of the third-party services used, or new functions of the app.
Essential contractual terms will not be changed without the user’s consent.
Changes will be announced in the app and on the website in good time before they take effect, with the changed passages marked. If the user does not agree with the changes, they can stop using the app at any time. The current version is available in the app and on the website.
13. Final provisions
German law applies, excluding the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. Mandatory consumer protection provisions of the country in which the user is habitually resident remain unaffected.
Where legally permissible, the place of jurisdiction is Munich.
The provider is neither obliged nor willing to take part in dispute resolution proceedings before a consumer arbitration board.
Should individual provisions be invalid, the validity of the remaining provisions remains unaffected.
